This is a post to help you with planning your trip to NYC on a low budget. New York City is really expensive but with the following tips you can definitely save money. You can save money on your plane ticket, hotel, food, activities etc.

Tip 1: Plane ticket
A plane ticket can be really expensive, especially when you're visiting New York City from a different continent. If you have the opportunity to visit New York City any time you want to: do not go during the high season! Plane tickets are the cheapest during the months February, March and April. During the winter and summer the plane tickets prices are really high. To save even more money: buy a ticket for a flight with transfer. A flight with a transfer is most of the time cheaper. This does take more time.

Tip 2: Hotels / places to stay

Staying in a luxurious hotel in Manhattan is really expensive so instead try to find a hotel in another borough or in New Jersey. Also is a B&B or an apartment via AirBnb cheaper. Make sure that the place you're staying has several reviews and proof of a good quality. A place for less than $50 per night is really difficult to find and the quality is most of the time not good. A great way to save money on your hotel is the website: secret escapes. Here you can find hotels with great discounts.

Tip 3: Food

Eating on a budget isn't that difficult in New York City. There are so many opportunities in the city. If you're staying in a place where meals are included or you can cook yourself, you are able to save a lot of money. Next to that you can eat on the streets, make sure to compare different prices. Most of the time the restaurants who do not belong to a big brand are cheaper.

Tip 4: Free activities

In New York City there is so much to do. You can make your trip to New York City very expensive by paying every day for activities like broadway shows, sport games or helicopter flights. But it is possible to have so much fun without paying anything. For example, go to one of the parks, enter the MoMa on friday nights for free, ride the Staten Island Ferry, go on a free tour in Brooklyn bridge park or simply walk around in the city and meet new friends.
